What is chip and seal?

Chip and seal is the process of transforming a rock or gravel path or driveway into a compacted and smooth surface by using a thin layer of asphalt mixed with small pieces of crushed aggregate, or “chip.” Once the layers are added, machinery is used to roll and compress them together into one solid formation.

What are the benefits?

Unlike asphalt, chip and seal is offered in more colors than black. You can choose different materials for the top coating that suit your style. Also, because standard chip and seal isn’t completely black like asphalt, the surface is often cooler and won’t absorb heat like asphalt will. Lastly, chip and seal is typically chosen over asphalt because it’s more affordable.
